Next Steps:

Thank you again for participating in this experience of getting to know who we are at Covenant Congregational Church.  We are so glad to have you as part of the community.  Formal church membership is an option for those of you who have participated.  The benefits of membership include a chance to demonstrate commitment to the church, to participate in decision-making for the entire church, and to serve in certain positions in church ministry and leadership.  We hope you will consider it.

Members are asked to contribute in the ways they are able to church life: by being present in worship and other events, giving your time, talents and treasure to its work and prayerfully engaging in the ministry, care and mission of the congregation.  We see all people who come as part of our church! but membership is a wonderful way to connect more deeply.

Next steps:

1.  There is an application attached.  Please fill out and return to a pastor by email or print.  (You can just edit the word doc and send it back).

2.  If you are a member with another congregation, request a transfer of membership.

3.  Those applying for membership will be presented at the church-wide meeting after worship on April 6th.  If you can, please attend and give a wave :).

4.  Your application will be voted on by the church leadership council that following Tuesday.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Pastor Devyn or myself.

A Brief History of the Covenant Congregational Church

of North Easton, MA

● 1870 twelve people were brought from Sweden to work in the Ames shovel shops. This
was the beginning of Swedish settlement in North Easton.
● 1876 a small group of Christians began to meet often in the house of William Allen, on
Pond Street.
● 1879 because of increased attendance, larger meeting quarters were needed and
worship moved to 54 Main Street above an old post office. In addition to people in Easton,
twenty to forty people would ride the streetcars from Campello (now in Brockton) to
attend services in the hall.
● December 20, 1883, a congregation formed as The Swedish Christian Evangelical
Ebed-Melech Church of North Easton. On December 29 the first meeting of the
newly-incorporated Church was held in the home of John A. Rohdin, 31 Jenny Lind
Street, with thirty-nine charter members present.
● 1884 the former Methodist Church at 140 Main Street was purchased and the Rev. Axel
Mallender arrived to become the first full-time pastor.
● 1885 the Sunday School was organized.
● 1890 the Church Choir began.
● 1899 the first confirmation class was formed.
● 1902 the first Children's Day was observed.
● 1925 the first worship service held in English. English worship was held once a month at
first, but eventually replaced Swedish entirely.
● June 29, 1948 the name of the Church was changed to Covenant Congregational
Church.
● 1958 a new addition was added to the church on Main Street.
● 1969 The Tiny Tots Nursery School was licensed by the state and began operating.
● 1980 land and a house were purchased at 204 Center Street. A construction company
built the outer shell of the new building with the interior completed entirely by
volunteer labor, an estimated 14,237 hours were given by the volunteer “Covenant
Construction Company”.
● April 1984 Pastor Delmar Peterson died tragically in an automobile accident on the way
to visit a parishioner at the hospital.
● September 1984 the new building was dedicated on Center Street.
